'Probably the NRL's tackle of the year'

Manly enforcer Steve Matai has rattled South Sydney prop Dave Tyrell with a contender for the NRL’s hit of the year.

In the 35th minute, Matai blindsided Tyrell from left centre and flattened the Rabbitohs bookend with a copy book shot around the midriff.

The hit prompted commentator Ray Warren to say, “Tyrell has been picked up with probably the tackle of the year.”

The trademark shot from Matai was the highlight of a steely defensive effort from the Sea Eagles in the first half, with winger Jorge Taufua also rattling Rabbitohs centre Dylan Walker.

Despite the Sea Eagles’ best efforts to intimidate South Sydney, the reigning premiers overpowered Manly to prevail 20-8 at ANZ Stadium.
