A pitch invader turned goal kicker after running onto the field and taking a try conversion during an English Super League game.

Warrington five-eighth Stefan Ratchford was lining up a sideline conversion late in the Wolves' win over Salford when a fan sprang from the terraces and tried to steal his thunder.

But despite showing good technique the intruder's around the corner attempt hooked wide of the posts before he scampered away.

Ratchford was left shaking his head with a wry smile while the Sky Sports commentators gave the man a nod for his attempt.

"He nearly got it," said one of the commentators. "It's good technique. (But) he should have kept that planted foot a bit stronger to get more oomph in it."

Another commentator suggested the jeans-clad fan could blame his wardrobe for the shank.

"Well it's difficult when you are wearing jeans," he said.

"You haven't got that flexibility they have with shorts."

For the record Ratchford managed to hit the mark with his conversion to deliver the fulltime score of 34-18.
