Peter Sharp quits as Cronulla coach

Embattled Cronulla Sharks have been dealt another blow with Peter Sharp quitting as coach, effective immediately.

The news comes amid another week from hell for the NRL club, following the sacking of star five-eighth Todd Carney over his lewd picture scandal. Sharks CEO Steve Noyce confirmed Sharp's decision via a statement a short time ago. “While very sad to see him go it was fitting that Peter departs on his own terms, that being on the back of a record-breaking comeback win for the club last Friday night in Brisbane,” Noyce said. “The club certainly appreciates his efforts in what has been a very difficult season and while he may have expressed a reluctance to take on the role when first handed the reins, once appointed Peter worked exceptionally hard and always acted in the best interests of the players and the club.” It is not known whether Sharp's decision to quit is related to the Carney scandal.Sharp took over as head coach following the suspension of Shane Flanagan over the club's controversial supplements program.Sharp has said only that his decision was in the best interests of al involved.“I’ve certainly enjoyed my time at the Sharks and I’ve met a number of wonderful people. I thank the Sharks for the opportunity both as an assistant and as the head coach, even with the challenges we’ve faced this year,” Sharp said.“But I think the decision I’ve made to step down is in the best interests of the club and I believe for me it is in my best interests as well. “I hope the players can fulfill their potential and finish the season on a positive note.”

Sharp's departure follows a reported backlash from some players over the sacking of Carney.

Many of his former teammates left a two-hour crisis meeting yesterday at Cronulla's home ground, Remondis Stadium, where it is understood they expressed their dismay.

The team cancelled a 9am training session because an official declared players were "not in the right head space".
