Eels forward Ryan Matterson could face a lengthy stint on the sidelines after he was sent off for a shoulder charge late in the second half of Parramatta's 56-10 thrashing at the hands of Manly.

With his side getting blown off the park, Matterson attempted to apply a big tackle on Manly centre Brad Parker, but got his timing completely wrong.

No wrapping of the arms appeared to occur as Matterson's shoulder instead made contact with the chin of Parker, who was knocked out before being helped off the field by trainers.

The collision immediately resulted in Matterson receiving his marching orders from referee Grant Atkins.

"He (Matterson) gets his feet in a really awkward position," rugby league great Andrew Johns said in commentary for Nine.

"That's a send-off. The one you compare it with - Corey Harawira-Naera - and if anything, that probably looked worse.

"He (Parker) was out before he even hit the ground. That was ugly."

While Parker was unable to return to the field, it was revealed shortly after the collision that he was up on his feet and communicating with the team's training staff in the sheds.

Parramatta's disciplinary issues didn't stop with Matterson either, with Marata Niukore sin-binned just three minutes later for a professional foul.

Niukore's 10-minute stint off the field resulted in Manly playing against 11 men, and they punished the Eels by crossing over for three tries.
