Todd Carney reveals surprise new role in life after NRL career

Former NRL star Todd Carney has revealed a surprising new role as a captain-coach as he attempts to move on from the abrupt ending to his professional career.

Carney last played for the Cronulla Sharks back in 2014 before the infamous 'bubbler' incident ended his time in the NRL, but he is set to be the captain-coach for local side in Byron Bay, and admitted that the new role would be a challenge.

"It makes me accountable for the team that I've got under me," Carney exclusively told Nine News.

"I won't be just (leading) the senior team. I'll be doing their juniors."

Despite attempts to make it back to the NRL, Carney's comeback attempts never materialised, but he suggested that he is no longer looking back.

"It's been five years now since I left the NRL and I've moved on from it," he said.

"I don't hate the NRL, it's made me who I am.

"Yes I'm disappointed in things, but I'm not going to kick stones."

Often professional athletes tend to struggle in their post-career lives, but the 2010 Dally M Medallist said he doesn't live with regrets.

"What I've done and what I've gone through has made me who I am today," he said.

"I feel that for the next chapter of my life I'm pretty resilient and there's not much that could happen that would take me down.

"While I've done some stupid things, when I say stupid, it's very stupid, but I've never hurt anyone."
