Newtown Jets win Canterbury Cup in thrilling extra-time finish
It was a thrilling finish in the Canterbury Cup grand final with the Newtown Jets mounting an incredible comeback to clinch the title from Wentworthville with a game-winning try in extra time.
Twelve months ago the Jets were at the end of a heartbreaking defeat to Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in the grand final, but this time round they wouldn't be second-best.
When the two teams could not be separated at fulltime, it was sure to be a nervous finish at Bankwest Stadium. A penalty goal from Newtown's Braydon Trindall with five minutes left in regular time locked the teams at 14-14 after the Magpies had led for much of the game.
Wentworthville got the lead with a field goal by five-eighth Jaeman Salmon in the first five minutes of extra time, but an amazing try by William Kennedy in the final minutes of the second period of extra time sealed a 20-15 victory for the Blue Bags.

Tyrone Phillips made a break off a deft Billy Magoulias kick which led to Kennedy's game-winner.
"Words can't describe how good that felt," Kennedy told NSWRL.
"I just saw Billy [Magoulias] put a kick in and just pushed through as a fullback would and ended up getting the try which was unreal.
"He's been working on it (his kicks) at training and they work out for us."
