Maguire snaps at ‘garbage’ notion after Broncos cop another massive loss

Broncos coach Michael Maguire’s fury was obvious in his post-match press conference, labelling it garbage the players would struggle for motivation during the rest of the season.

The Broncos were comprehensively beaten 40-6 at home against the Warriors, in a match where their effort areas looked incredibly concerning.

Maguire said the performance was “not good enough” when first asked to give his thoughts.

“We won’t want to do that next weekend because we’ll cop the same,” he said.

“It was really disappointing, that one. We’re not playing the style that we know we’ve practised, and if they don’t do it you won’t get the rewards.

“We had a team that muscled up and went after us. Not good enough.”

Stand-in captain Pat Carrigan was then asked if it was difficult to stay motivated now that the side out of finals contention.

He didn’t get a chance to respond as Maguire interjected as said “that’s garbage”.

“We’re playing the team next week [Canberra] that’s in the same boat. We’re playing for the Broncos,” he said.

“The boys are playing for the Broncos jersey that they wear. That is not good enough. I normally keep my cool at these things. We need to have a good hard look at ourselves and get into the game the way we know we can, or we’ll get the same anyway.”

Maguire also said he wasn’t confused about what’s gone wrong but wouldn’t elaborate on the reason.

“I’ll keep that between us,” he said.

Carrigan managed to get a word in when asked about the Broncos defence and how poor they were in the first 20 minutes, conceding three tries. One of those tries came when the Warriors were down a man too.

“Just stupidity on both sides of the ball,” he said.

“Just a lack of desire and intent to do your job. It’s not good enough from us as players we just got out-competed tonight, which was disappointing.”
