Days after his Dragons axing, Shane Flanagan has already been linked with a head coaching return

Just days after parting ways with St George-Illawarra, Shane Flanagan is reportedly interested in coaching again, with a Super League club on the premiership winner's radar.

The 60-year-old lost the last 11 games of his tenure at the Dragons dating back to last season and was replaced by assistant Dean Young this week, who will serve as interim coach until the end of the season.

Flanagan would not be considered a top candidate for head coaching roles in the NRL in the near future, so if the coach is not interested in taking a step back to assistant roles, the Super League would be viewed as the most realistic option.

A report by Love Rugby League reveals Flanagan is interested in the vacancy at the Catalans Dragons.

The report cites sources who claim Flanagan had been interested in the position for some time, suggesting he knew the writing was on the wall at the Dragons long before he was let go.

The report claims a deal with Catalans would come at a reduced salary for Flanagan, since they have cut a lot of spending from the club this year.

Ryan Sheridan is the current interim coach at Catalans, after Joel Tomkins took the role when Steve McNamara left at the end of 2025, following a nine-year stint.

Flanagan could also be a strong candidate for other vacant jobs in the Super League, with Hull KR losing Willie Peters at the end of this year to the PNG Chiefs and the Huddersfield Giants sacking Luke Robinson earlier this season.

It's unclear if Flanagan would entertain coaching at either of those clubs.

Catalans have had a mixed opening to their 2026 campaign, currently sitting in sixth spot on the table with five wins from eight games.
