The Brisbane Broncos have lost State of Origin star Selwyn Cobbo to cross-town rival the Dolphins.

The Dolphins on Friday morning announced a one-year deal for Cobbo for 2026, although it is uncertain how much they will pay him.

Cobbo, 23, is said to be earning $650,000 this season but was only offered $300,000 a year to stay at Red Hill, ultimately convincing him to leave.

The Dolphins beat North Queensland to the signature of the six-game Maroons representative who has been dropped to reserve grade by Broncos coach Michael Maguire in recent weeks.

"The Dolphins have always said we are about continuing to build a roster that will make us one of the top teams in the NRL," club CEO Terry Reader said.

"Selwyn is an accomplished player who has done some amazing things at both Origin and NRL level already.

"But we believe he has untapped potential to go to even greater heights in our game and are excited about what he can do in a Dolphins jersey."

The Broncos will keep Cobbo for the remainder of the season but whether he makes it back to first grade remains to be seen.

He can play anywhere in the backline and has been likened to NRL legend Greg Inglis since he was a teenager.

League legends Brad Fittler and Andrew Johns both suggested South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett could get the best out of Cobbo if he was to join the Rabbitohs.

Now he will join a Dolphins backline that already boasts superstars like Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Herbie Farnworth.
