Michael Cheika has been locked in as the newest addition to the Sydney Roosters coaching staff for next season.

The former Wallabies coach will join the club's ranks and replaces the recently-departed Justin Holbrook, who has moved to the Knights as head coach for 2026.

Cheika has spoken at length about his desire to coach at the NRL level since finishing his commitments in rugby union earlier this year with the Leicester Tigers and his first role back in the 13-man code was confirmed on Wednesday morning.

The 58-year-old will work in a specialist coaching position with the NRL forwards, while also supporting coaches and players throughout the pathway system.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson paid tribute to Cheika's ability to get the best out of those around him after finding plenty of success during his career.

"Michael and I have had a strong relationship for many years, and I've always admired the way he leads and challenges athletes," Robinson said.

"His experience in rugby brings a different perspective that will inspire and test our players and coaches.

He has acted as head coach for the NSW Waratahs and Stade Francais at club level, as well as both Australia and Argentina on the international stage.

The spot with the Roosters is seen as the first step for Cheika in his path to becoming a full-time coach at NRL level.

Cheika has received support from the likes of Andrew Johns regarding his aspirations.
