EXCLUSIVE: Phil Gould offers insight into how Bulldogs are planning to use Lachlan Galvin this season

Canterbury boss Phil Gould has lifted the lid on Lachlan Galvin's first few days at Belmore and when he might be seen in the NRL team.

The teenager has been named on the extended bench for Monday's round 14 clash with Parramatta, after only officially joining the club last Friday.

Debate has raged about where the 19-year-old fits into the ladder-leading team.

Gould insists he has no hand in team selections, but offered a glimpse into the mind of Bulldogs staff when speaking on Wide World of Sports' Six Tackles with Gus podcast.

"As I said to the coaches, there is no hurry to find a solution in the next two or three weeks. We have got him for three years," Gould said.

"How much of a role he plays this week, or even this year, I don't know. That is up to the coaching staff and Lachlan Galvin.

"I'm not saying he won't play Monday, but that is far from decided at the moment.

"There is a good chance he might play NSW Cup on the weekend. If not I'd say he will come off the bench (in first grade)."

Galvin is a playmaker by trade and had played all his NRL games this season to date at five-eighth for the Tigers.

But coach Cameron Ciraldo has resisted the urged to axe one of his spine players in order to bring the talented teen straight in.

Matt Burton holds a mortgage on the No.6 jumper while Toby Sexton has been performing admirably at halfback.

Bailey Hayward has been a sensation as the bench utility, and lock Kurt Mann was called into Queensland's Origin squad last month, such has been his form at club level.

There have been suggestions Galvin will one day become a ball-playing middle forward but he is unlikely to unseat Mann or Hayward from the line-up just yet.

While Galvin's immediate future with the team is unclear, Gould praised the newcomer's enthusiasm.

"He has virtually been in there all day every day. He is in the video room, with the coaches. They can't get him to go home," Gould said.

"He is on the training field for an hour after everyone has finished. He is keen to get back into it.

"We have invested in the player we believe he is going to be. We believe over the next three years he can develop... we have our opinions on where we think he will get to, and that's what we have bought."

Galvin's last couple of months at Concord was ugly, to say the least.

He sat down with 9News' Danny Weidler for a tell-all interview on Monday night and Gould was in awe at how he handled himself.

"I didn't know that interview was taking place, it was organised through his manager. Danny said he had never met a more mature kid, and he really handled the questions well," Gould said.

"Virtually he said everything has been under his control - his manager works for him, he doesn't work for his manager. He's the one who told his manager what he wanted, and where he wanted to go, what he wanted to do. I thought the interview gave a more measured description of what went on. He was fairly direct, he was very honest.

"As he said, all the criticism that comes his way or what people say... he's got to cop that on the chin.

"Very mature. I don't know of too many other 19-year-olds who would have done the interview to be honest. But to have handled it as well as he did I thought was exceptional."
