EXCLUSIVE: Billy Slater urges Titans to act on star's contract before rivals swoop on November 1

Billy Slater has urged Gold Coast to keep Jayden Campbell at the club, pointing out the "loyalty" the second-generation star showed earlier in his career.

The in-form halfback remains unsigned beyond next season, meaning at this stage he will head to the open market from November 1 where he would likely attract plenty of interest.

Campbell has shown glimpses of his undeniable potential since making his debut with the Titans four years ago, but is now starting to find consistency in the No.7 jersey.

Despite being the shining light in another tough year, at this stage there has been no movement on his contract and there were even suggestions a fortnight ago that the Titans could be shopping him around to rival clubs.

Speaking on Nine's Billy Slater Podcast after the 25-year-old almost helped produce a stunning comeback win over reigning premiers Penrith, the legendary fullback turned Maroons coach was quizzed about whether the Titans need to move quickly.

His response should set off alarm bells inside Gold Coast headquarters.

"He'd be in my team, absolutely," Slater said.

"I remember when he re-signed with the Titans [in 2023], there was a lot of opportunity to go elsewhere and probably for a lot more money.

"But he's a Gold Coast boy, he grew up there and he wanted to stay there. I thought that showed a whole heap of loyalty and he's someone that you can really build around.

"[He is] probably my favourite player to watch in the competition. He plays with humility, he plays with respect and he is so brilliant at so many different things in the game.

"His running game is outstanding and the way he is elusive in traffic, it looks like he knows what he's doing and everyone else doesn't know what he's doing. He's got a great passing game and he's evolved into this halfback now.

"We all know what type of player his father was and he's certainly got those traits that Preston had in his game."

Campbell has scored 24 tries in 73 first grade appearances for the Titans, following in the footsteps of his Dally M-winning father who was a foundation player at the club.

This season, the livewire has registered nine try assists and broken 51 tackles in 15 games, cementing himself as the Titans halfback after spending plenty of time at fullback and five-eighth throughout his first three years in the NRL.

However, the club have already locked up fellow spine members AJ Brimson and Keano Kini until 2030, while young playmaker Zane Harrison could be in the mix soon.

Kieran Foran will retire at the end of this season while Tom Weaver, who has featured sporadically in the halves, is off-contract heading into 2026.
