EXCLUSIVE: Fletcher Sharpe unfazed by $13m signing of 'unbelievable' Dylan Brown

Knights gun Fletcher Sharpe believes he can "feed off" new recruit Dylan Brown when the game's $13 million man joins the club next season.

Sharpe has been electric to start the season for Newcastle, putting his hand up to be the long-term five-eighth even when Brown arrives in 2026.

The 20-year-old, who recently put pen to paper on a fresh three-year deal, is expected to partner the Kiwi international for years to come.

While the Kiwi international has spent the majority of his own career at five-eighth, the likelihood is that Brown will wear the No.7 jumper once he switches clubs.

Sharpe on the other hand will stay in the No.6 jersey and claims there was no internal discussion about his position when the Knights opted to sign Brown.

"Not really - there were no talks around the club at all," he told Wide World of Sports.

"He's an unbelievable and exciting player and he's got the type of game where we could feed off each other a little bit.

"As a team, we haven't talked about it too much - we are all dialled in on this year."

In an appearance on Wide World of Sports' Freddy and The Eighth, Sharpe did say he would 'back himself' to take the halfback spot if required, though it appears unlikely.

Sharpe has filled a variety of roles since making his first grade debut last year, with the ability to cover anywhere in the backline a major bonus for Newcastle.

There had been some conjecture over Sharpe's preferred spot in pre-season, but the Cessnock speedster has now set the record straight.

"Since I started I was always a half or five-eighth, until I was about 17 - then I went to fullback, literally just due to an injury and never moved back to the halves," Sharpe said.

"Fullback was obviously my preferred spot, but KP [Kalyn Ponga] has got that locked down and I'm enjoying building a combination with him.

"Last year I played a few different positions … playing a variety of different positions can only help my game. You know what other players expect of you and what you expect of them."

The relationship with Ponga is still in its infancy, but their combination on the field has already got Knights fans excited for the future.

Sharpe heaped praise on the Knights skipper and feels like there's still plenty of room to grow - especially with the looming arrival of Brown on the horizon.

"He's been unreal," Sharpe said.

"When I first started last year and got some games at fullback, he talked me through what was expected and what I needed to do for the team.

"This year, building a combination with him has been pretty cool.

"There's a few things we've been working on … it's exciting."
