Sickening Eli Katoa saga takes sad turn as Melbourne Storm gun ruled out for 2026 season
Eli Katoa has been ruled out of the 2026 season, with the Melbourne Storm star facing a long recovery from a head injury after three separate collisions in one game for Tonga led to a brain injury.
Katoa has remained in hospital since the third round of the Pacific Championships, having been rushed into surgery after his condition deteriorated on the side of the field.
The Melbourne Storm confirmed that the backrower has now left hospital. He is back in Melbourne but remains under the care of medical specialists and will not play any part in the 2026 season.

"Eli's health and wellbeing remain our number one priority," Storm CEO Justin Rodski said in a statement.
"It is great to have him home safely and under the care of our club doctor and local specialists. He is improving each day and looking forward to continuing his rehabilitation from home."

No exact time frame for Katoa's return to rugby league has been identified and there are fears that he may never be able to play again.
The Storm made it clear the club would continue to support Katoa throughout his long recovery journey.
"In consultation with our doctor and neuro specialists, Eli will not return to training this pre-season and won't be available for the 2026 season," Rodski continued.
"He has a long road ahead in his recovery and his focus will be on returning to full health before considering any form of return to training.
"Eli is a much loved and respected member of our team and club. The Storm family will rally around him and support him through his recovery."
