Broncos coach Michael Maguire has missed a golden opportunity to show his players that the club needs to change its ways by not sacking star five-eighth Ezra Mam.

Mam injured two passengers in a car crash and subsequently failed two drug tests.

It's the latest in a series of off field indiscretions by the Broncos, who also crashed and burned on the field last season after making the 2023 grand final.

Maguire was brought in to give the club a new hard edge - and sacking Mam would have proved to the playing group that he means business.

But Mam is a good player - so he has been spared the axe despite the serious nature of the charges.

He is currently in rehab and will be suspended and fined by the Broncos - but is that enough of a message?

"No, he hasn't (been sacked)," Maguire told 4BC Radio.

"We are working through things and I am working through with the organisation around the whole situation.

"We need to make sure we are slow about our decisions because we have to see everything for what it is.

"It's a big incident and it's not taken lightly, but Ezra is working on himself and making sure he is going through his process.

"We will need to connect with everyone who has been involved in that accident."

The NRL may still suspend Mam - but meanwhile the playing group sees that if you are good enough, you can do as you please.
