'Got a decision to make': Cowboys coach 'unsure' of Reece Robson future amid Roosters raid

Todd Payten admits he is "unsure" whether co-captain Reece Robson will remain at the club long-term as the Sydney Roosters chase the Cowboys star.

The 26-year-old has cemented himself as one of the game's best hookers in recent years, earning spots in both the NSW and Australian squads.

Robson has been available to rival clubs for the 2026 season since November 1, but at this stage is yet to make a decision on his future.

A return to Sydney to join the Tricolours has been heavily rumoured, especially after the comments from current Roosters dummy-half Brandon Smith on a recent podcast.

While has has made a home in North Queensland and become a leader at the club, Payten was non-committal when asked about Robson's status on Triple M Radio.

"Yep, absolutely [we want to keep him] ... quality player, plays big minutes, has hardly missed a game for the last two or three years," the coach said.

"We understand that there is interest and we've put together our best offer. As it stands, Robbo has got a decision to make.

"Whichever way it goes, I'm unsure at the moment - but I know he has openly said that he enjoys Townsville and wants to be here for a while.

"We'll see how that plays out, but if he decides to go we need to be pragmatic about what we do and how we handle it ... but that's further down the line."

Robson has played 119 first grade games since making his debut for the Dragons six years ago, before making the move to the Cowboys at the start of 2020.
