Former NRL player Lloyd Perrett takes next step in legal battle against Manly Sea Eagles

Former NRL player Lloyd Perrett has taken the next step in his bid to launch legal action against the Manly Sea Eagles.

According to a report from The Sydney Morning Herald, the legal firm representing the 29-year-old have sent a letter to the club asking for preliminary discovery material.

Carter Capner will request employment records, performance assessments and all documents, statements and materials relating to a training session in 2017.

Perrett collapsed and had a seizure during the session, where he alleges the club's coaching staff deprived him of water.

The front-rower claims he never physically or mentally recovered from the incident, despite remaining at the Sea Eagles until the end of the 2019 season.

Manly has been given until September 26 to hand over the materials voluntarily, with Perrett's legal team indicating they may take the matter to the Federal Court of Australia.

Perrett began to take steps towards legal action after an inquiry into the death of Keith Titmuss in 2020 and spoke about his own ordeal in an interview earlier this year.

"It's been an option for a long time but I avoided it because I don't want to look like someone who is trying to get money," he said in May.

"I spoke to an occupational therapist and they said it's survivor's guilt. I was feeling really sad and upset [about Titmuss]. Not only did he not survive and I did, but he was my teammate and I knew him. He was only 18 years old when I was there.

"I feel I need to do this. It's not about money, it's not about me. It's about player safety."

None of the staff who oversaw the session remain at Manly, and the club has declined to comment on the matter.
