Latrell Mitchell avoids surgery as Rabbitohs season hangs in the balance

Latrell Mitchell will avoid surgery for the foot injury suffered in round 18, but the Rabbitohs superstar is still set to spend significant time on the sidelines.
On Sunday morning, The Sydney Morning Herald confirmed Mitchell would see a specialist this week in the hopes of avoiding what would be season-ending foot surgery.
In some positive news for South Sydney, the 27-year-old won't go under the knife and the club is hopeful of nursing him back onto the field.

"A decision has been made to manage his left midfoot injury conservatively, meaning he will not require surgery," a club statement said.
"Mitchell will get another scan and review in a fortnight's time to ensure the injury is progressing. The Rabbitohs will provide further updates at the appropriate time."

Mitchell suffered the injury in the first half of the Rabbitohs' win over Parramatta last Thursday night, but played through the pain and finished the game.

Souths have turned their season around over the past couple of months, with Mitchell at the centre of their resurgence, helping the side climb to within two wins of the top-eight.
The injury setback will rule Mitchell out of the Origin decider for NSW, just weeks after starring in his return game against Queensland in game two.
Bradman Best has replaced Mitchell at left centre for the Blues.
