Wayne Bennett and Jack Gibson make history with NRL Hall of Fame induction

Wayne Bennett and Jack Gibson have made history as the first coaches to be inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame.

The legendary coaches, who have won a combined 12 premierships, will join administrators Ken Arthurson and John Quayle, as well as broadcasters Frank Hyde and David Morrow as the new Hall of Fame members.

Bennett has coached more first grade games than any coach in history across stints with the Raiders, Broncos, Dragons, Knights, Rabbitohs and Dolphins.

The 74-year-old will continue his career for at least the next three years after putting pen to paper on a deal with South Sydney from 2025 onwards.

Gibson - who passed away in 2008 - was nicknamed 'Supercoach' and found great success during his tenures with the Roosters and Eels.

"It is an historic moment for the game to recognise for the first time the extraordinary contribution of two legendary coaches, Jack Gibson and Wayne Bennett," ARLC chairman Peter V'landys said in a statement.

"Wayne is the ultimate people manager. He has the rare ability to get the best of a player, no matter their background. Players who come from hard times or players who have everything, Wayne takes them to another level.

"He can make every player the most important in the team. He has a rare presence that gains the attention of all demographics.

"Jack was just the first super coach. He took calculated risks that always seemed to pay off. Jack was innovative and futuristic and was ahead of his time.

"His one liners were legendary."

Gibson and Bennett also coached at the State of Origin level during their careers, while the latter also spent time in charge of Australia, New Zealand and England.

The induction of Morrow was announced last month, just prior to the beloved commentator's passing, while Hyde will also be inducted posthumously.

Arthurson and Quayle are two of rugby league's most respected administrators, spending time in club land and with the ARL and NSWRL.

The next batch of player inductions will be announced later in August.
