One of rugby league's oldest feuds has reignited after the NRL announced several Hall of Fame inductees on Wednesday.

Beloved league great Darryl Brohman took to X to vent his dismay at old nemesis Les Boyd earning a Hall of Fame gong.

Boyd will be presented at a ceremony next Wednesday alongside fellow inductees Lionel Morgan, Ben Elias, Steve Renouf, Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston, Billy Slater, Benji Marshall, Cooper Cronk, Greg Inglis, and Sam Burgess.

Boyd's on-field feats can hardly be questioned - he represented Australia 17 times and was arguably the best front-rower in the world for a number of years in the 1980s.

But he earned a reputation for some questionable acts, most famously a horrifying illegal hit on Brohman during State of Origin in 1983.

Boyd hit Brohman in the head with his elbow. The incident resulted in a 12-month suspension and Boyd was later sued by Brohman, a case that was settled out of court.

Soon after returning from that ban, Boyd copped another long suspension for eye gouging Billy Johnstone.

In a statement on Wednesday, Australian Rugby League chairman Peter V'landys congratulated the group of inductees.

"What an amazing group of players," he said.

"All different, all deserving in their own right. This list of players includes some of the toughest, the most talented, the greatest players of their generations."

This crop of inductees boasts significant achievements and contributions to the game.

Lionel Morgan, now deceased, was the first Indigenous Australian to represent the nation in any major code when he was selected to play in a rugby league Test match.

With 430 games under his belt, Melbourne Storm legend Cameron Smith holds the record for most NRL matches by an individual player.

While South Sydney star Sam Burgess becomes the first England representative to be inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame.

The final list of inductees was confirmed following a meeting of the Hall of Fame Committee in July. The committee includes select Hall of Fame members, media representatives, rugby league historians and statisticians, and independent members nominated by the league's awards sub-committee.

V'landys explained that the group was tasked with selecting a larger-than-normal class as the last induction of players into the Hall of Fame occurred in 2019.

"I'm in awe of this group of players and what they have each done in the game and for the game," V'landys said.

"This is the best of the best across several phenomenal eras. The group is full of premiership winners, Dally M Medal winners, Clive Churchill Medal winners, [and] Australia, New Zealand and England representatives.

"There are brilliant halves, powerful and durable forwards and gifted outside backs. All of these players are exceptional."

Earlier this month, Wayne Bennett and Jack Gibson made history as the first coaches to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Administrators Ken Arthurson and John Quayle, and broadcasters Frank Hyde and David Morrow were also announced as inductees.
