Payne Haas set to test the open market after rejecting Brisbane Broncos' offer

Brisbane's search for its first premiership since 2006 has taken a significant blow with Payne Haas signalling his intent to test the open market.

Haas - who is contracted until the end of 2024 - will be free to negotiate with rival clubs from November 1.

The Broncos have tabled an extension offer to Haas that would make him the highest-paid forward in the club's history - according to The Sydney Morning Herald - but the prop has decided he'll assess what's around.

Various reports over the past year have linked Haas to the Bulldogs, along with Australian rugby and European clubs.

Bulldogs general manager Phil Gould was highly complimentary of Haas back in May.

"He might be the greatest of all time, he's 23 still ... I've never seen anything like it," he said on 100% Footy.

Haas is managed by Ahmad Merhi under the Sportsplayer Management stable, and requested a release from his Broncos contract last year, which was rejected by the club.

The Broncos star is currently sidelined with an ankle injury which ruled him out of Origin III.

Haas also won't feature against the Bulldogs this weekend, and isn't the only player out due to injury with Corey Oates a late withdrawal.

Oates was set to play his 200th match at Belmore on Saturday, however coach Kevin Walters revealed the milestone has been put on hold, for now.

"We lost a winger at training yesterday," Walters told SENQ on Thursday.

"He's injured his knee in a training incident so he won't be available this weekend.

"He's off to see the surgeon and the specialist today to see if (he will miss) any time away from the game.

"He certainly won't be playing against the Bulldogs but we're very fortunate that we have got great depth in a lot of positions.

"That depth is being tested at the moment which I'm OK with.

"As one door closes, another one opens (so) Jesse Arthars will come in as he has done when Oates has been unavailable."
