Matt Moylan extends his stay with Cronulla Sharks

Cronulla have extended the stay of a key member of their halves rotation, with Matt Moylan agreeing to a new deal that will last until the end of next year.

Moylan joined the Shire club in 2018 after a 'swap' that sent James Maloney the other way.

"I'm really grateful for the opportunity to stay for another year," Moylan said.

"I've had a few chats to Fitzy (incoming coach Craig Fitzgibbon) and I look forward to working with him, (current interim head coach) Josh (Hannay) and the coaching staff next year. I'm confident they can make me a better player on the field and help with my development off it, as well.

"Until then I'm working hard to get back on the field next week and to finish the season off strongly."

After Chad Townsend was allowed to leave mid-season and Shaun Johnson announced he was heading back to the New Zealand Warriors after this year, keeping Moylan in Cronulla became even more important.

"I'm really happy for the club and Matt that both parties have come to an agreement for next season," Hannay said.

"Matt has been one of our better performers this season and, although injured at the moment, he's shown a greater durability than in previous years. I put this down to Matt having a stronger focus and dedication to his preparation, and if he continues to focus on these parts of his game, coupled with his undoubted talent, I believe his best is still to come."

Cronulla are in the process of making wholesale changes at key positions for next season, already securing Nicho Hynes from the Storm and Cameron McInnes from the Dragons ahead of 2022.

Moylan has missed the last few weeks for Cronulla with a calf injury, but the club is hopeful he'll be available for selection in the next couple of weeks.
