Popular Dragons forward Joel Thompson is set for a shock switch to Manly in 2018.

Thompson is contracted to the Dragons for next season but the two clubs are close to coming to a deal that will see him change colours.

The news will come as a major surprise to Dragons fans, with Thompson one of their most consistent forwards this season.

But the Sea Eagles have lost experienced forwards Brenton Lawrence (Titans), and Nate Myles (Storm) and feel the hard-running Thompson will boost their pack strength.

The 29-year-old Thompson is a 10-year NRL veteran, having started his career with the Raiders in 2008.

He switched to the Dragons in 2014 and has been a fan favourite in recent seasons.

Dragons officials are certain to feel a backlash from fans if the deal goes through in coming days.
