NRL young-gun Kalyn Ponga has confidently declared himself ready to play State of Origin football despite being in only his second year in the top-flight.

Appearing on Nine’s 100% Footy, the Knights full-back responded to the hype surrounding his selection in the Queensland origin squad.

“I feel like I’m ready, I’d love to put the jersey on,” Ponga said.

Ponga made waves early this season after a stellar start to the year with the Newcastle Knights following his transfer from the Cowboys.

Pundits of the game have heaped praise upon the 20-year-old for his footballing IQ, skill and maturity, leading many to tout his future greatness in the Maroons Jersey.

However, Ponga insists his focus remains on league football.

“I’ve said this to everyone who’s asked, my main focus is here at the knights so I’m not going to hold on to hope that I play.

“But If I get that jersey, that opportunity, that chance, I’ll take it with two hands.”
