Newcastle star Kalyn Ponga could be in trouble with the NRL’s match review committee after being reported for a trip early in his side's clash against the Warriors.

Just after the 10-minute mark, Ponga uncharacteristically stuck his leg out and then pulled it back but unfortunately he made contact with Chanel Harris-Tavita.

The whistle blower pulled no punches and immediately penalised Ponga and put him on report.

A trip used to be deemed a serious offence in the past with players copping suspensions for such an act.

But in the modern game a similar play at an opponent could result in a fine.

Earlier this season Manly veteran Joel Thompson was fined $1350 for a tripping offence.

The Knights led 16-12 at halftime off the back of a strong performance from Mitchell Pearce and Ponga.
