NRL: Hayne tight-lipped over future

Code-hopper Jarryd Hayne has finally returned home following a two-year odyssey that saw him hit the highs of the NFL and the lows of a shattered Olympic dream.

But what's next in store for the 28-year-old is now one of Australian sport's biggest mysteries.

The former Parramatta Eels' star touchdown in Sydney today after he was axed from the Fiji sevens squad set to compete at the Rio Olympics.

The end of that "dream" came after he sensationally walked out on NFL franchise the San Francisco 49ers earlier in the year.

Now the biggest question is where the 'Hayne Plane' will next land with the NRL, the Australian Rugby Union and overseas clubs pursuing the star.

But Hayne will keep sport fans guessing for a little while longer, remaining tight-lipped over his future.

"It's been a hectic five weeks, physically and mentally and emotionally," Hayne told Nine.

"I'll sit down with my manager over the weekend and, you know, and kind of debrief."

The beleaguered Eels, who are deep in negotiations with the Hayne camp, will be hoping their favourite son will return home – and quickly.

The blue and gold has endured a season from hell with the NRL recent enforcing its punishment of a $1m fine and 12 docked competition points for the club rorting the salary cap.

Star playmaker Corey Norman, who was recently embroiled in an alleged sex tape scandal, has been stood down by the club after being convicted of drug possession.

And captain Kieran Foran walked out on the club after being plagued by personal demons from the start of the season.

Coincidently, it was Foran's decision to take a rest from the game that opened the door for a Hayne homecoming with the club able clear the former skipper's salary and find some wriggle room in the cap.

And because Hayne is a free agent, the club can make their move despite the trade deadline passing on June 30.

However, it could be a hard-fought race for Hayne's signature with the ARU and a number of European and Japanese clubs expected to try and lure him away from the Eels.

"I think everyone's got their opinion for the last 24 months," Hayne said.

"Myself, I just gone debrief and see what the future holds."
