Kangaroos fullback Greg Inglis showed he was human after all, gifting New Zealand a crucial try after failing to clean up a kick into the ingoal area during the Anzac Test loss to New Zealand
With the Kiwis leading 20-6 in the shadows of halftime, Inglis chased a kick into Australia's ingoal area, following a sweeping break by the men in black and white.
Inglis appeared to be in control as he dived to bat the ball to safety over the dead ball line.
But the champion No.1 inexplicably missed his mark, allowing New Zealand centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall to pounce.
The try took Stephen Kearney's men to a 26-6 lead at the break and left the Australians facing an almighty task to get back into the game.
And despite battling gamely in the second half, the lead proved too big to reel in with the Kangaroos falling 26-12.
The loss was Australia's third straight defeat to the Kiwis after falling to their trans-Tasman rivals in the Four Nations final in November as well as a pool game during the tournament.
It has also placed New Zealand in the box seat to claim the No.1 mantle in rugby league, which they will achieve should they beat England in a Test match at the end of the year.
