Canterbury NRL star Will Hopoate is seeking $1.83 million in damages from his former club Parramatta.

In an ongoing matter before the Supreme Court, documents tendered at a directions hearing on Thursday showed that Hopoate was also seeking costs and interest after the Eels allegedly reneged on an agreement.

According to an amended statement of claim Parramatta provided Hopoate's manager, Tyran Smith, with a contract offer on April 9, 2015, Fairfax Media reports.

Further, the claim stated that Hopoate signed and returned the offer the next day and that on April 16 the parties entered into an NRL contract.

In their defence statement, Parramatta conceded an offer was made to Smith, but claimed the "Unexecuted Agreement did not constitute a binding contractual agreement".

An NRL spokesperson confirmed to Fairfax that if Hopoate was successful the payout would not have to come out of Parramatta's salary cap.

The Eels are already being investigated by the NRL for alleged salary cap breaches.
