Newcastle Knights skipper Kurt Gidley's foul mouth got the better of him after he conceded a penalty as his side desperately chased a miracle victory against the Roosters.

The Knights could have been forgiven for giving up the chase at half-time as they were put to the sword and entered the sheds trailing 26-0.

But the home side refused to bow out quietly and were on the cusp of one of the season's biggest boilovers when they got to within 10 points of the Roosters.

However, the Knights' heroics were snuffed out when Gidley, with the try line in sight, gave away a penalty after mix up with two of his teammates.

The referees were left with no choice but to blow for an advantage when the runners barged into the Rooster defence and created a red and blue wall for their skipper.

The call and the pressure of the situation hit tipping point for Gidley as he lashed out at a number of Roosters players who had moved into confront him.

"F--- off!" Gidley yelled at Roosters James Maloney and Jake Friend.

The ugly verbal blast instantly drew admonishment from the Channel Nine commentary team, with one noting: "That’s one of those instances I wish we had a seven-second delay."

The Roosters eventually went on to claim a 38-22 victory.
