Broncos excited by Walters recall: Gillett

Brisbane star Matt Gillett believes the appointment of Kevin Walters as an assistant coach at the NRL club next year will make a telling impact on the team.

The Broncos on Monday confirmed Walters, who also signed a two-year extension as Queensland State of Origin coach, would be Wayne Bennett's right-hand man next season.

And Gillett is adamant the playing group, eight of which played under Walters in the Maroons team this year, are huge fans of the club legend.

It is Walter's third stint in the Broncos' coaching group.

"Obviously he was there in '15 and he's gone away, but I'm happy that Kevvie's back now. He's great to have around the club," Gillett said of the Walters news.

"He's a bit like (Allan Langer). He's a bit of a character as well on the field. It's always good to have ex-players coaching because he's pretty passionate when he is coaching.

"But he's got another side to him, a good friendly side. I'm happy he's back and get to work with him again at the Broncos."

Gillett admitted Walters' passion had often got the better of him in the coaching box, but insisted the 50-year-old also consistently gets the best out of his playing group.

Walters this year became just the third coach to win his first two Origin series.

"I've been there after Mal (Meninga) left and Kevvie took over. He's good for the boys off the field, but when he's coaching, he's very passionate," Gillett said.

"And that comes out in the way he coaches. He gets a bit emotional sometimes but the players love that stuff. He gets emotional and it shows you what it means to him.

"To have him at the Broncos again, a lot of the boys will be pretty happy about that."
