Bennett bemused by McQueen England call

A phone call from England coach Wayne Bennett may yet come for former Queensland backrower Chris McQueen - but it could take a while.

Bennett on Wednesday appeared bemused by reports that Gold Coast's McQueen may be the next NRL player he tries to recruit for England duty.

The master mentor will make his debut as England coach at the 2016 Four Nations, but claims the end-of-year tournament is the last thing on his mind.

Bennett had reportedly organised talks this week with McQueen after a previous bid to poach Kangaroos stars Josh and Brett Morris fell through.

McQueen played six State of Origin games for Queensland but is eligible for England duty thanks to his London-born dad.

McQueen told News Corp on Wednesday it would be tough to turn his back on Queensland but confirmed he would play for England if Bennett came calling.

But Bennett says he hasn't contacted McQueen.

"I haven't even read the story," he said.

"I have no eyes on the Four Nations at all.

"What can I do about it? I don't pick a team for six weeks or something."

Told McQueen was keen to play for England, Bennett smiled: "Well, he better hang by the phone, see if he gets a phone call."

Bennett said his priority was helping his NRL club Brisbane snap a worrying run of six losses in eight games.
