Error in Sydney Marathon medal detail catches Germany’s attention
Sydney Marathon organisers have addressed a rather geographical mix-up regarding its finisher medals, which mistakenly features a stadium located more than 16,000km away.
Earlier in the week, the official Sydney Marathon social media unveiled their highly anticipated medal design, telling runners they would “find the story of the course in the details.”

However, runners and observers alike quickly noticed a major mistake.
Instead of Sydney’s Allianz Stadium in Moore Park, the medal prominently features the distinctive exterior of the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany.
This is definitely not a landmark runners will be passing on marathon morning. Rather than quickly rectifying the mistake a week out from race day, organisers instead embraced the error online.
“A little too much international flavour has found its way onto the back of the finisher’s medal, with an incorrect depiction of the stadium,” the account posted after the mistake went viral.
“We’re not going to run from it, it was an unfortunate error, though it’s certainly given everyone something to talk about this weekend, mostly in good humour.
“It’s a beautiful medal, and now a little bit more unique. What it represents doesn’t change.
“We’re grateful to our participants and partners for taking it in such good humour.”
Germany’s Allianz Arena also made light of the situation, inviting any runners who feel like a detour to Munich the chance to see the stadium.
“Mistakes happen. What’s more, the medals are now something very special and truly beautiful. Good luck to all the participants – go and get that medal!” the account wrote.
“And if you’re ever in Germany, we look forward to seeing you at the Allianz Arena.”
Despite the glitch, up to 35,000 runners from 120 countries will descend on the World Marathon Major course on Sunday morning for the 42.2km run.

The course begins in North Sydney – at the same start line as the 2000 Sydney Olympics marathon – and will run over landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and finish at the Opera House.
This is not the first time a sports organisation has had to fix their official medals.
In Paris 2024, the Olympic bronze medals were replaced due to discolouration and in Milan Cortina, there were reports of cracking and medals snapping.
