Australian Diamonds in hilarious anthem fail for Quad Series match against New Zealand Silver Ferns

The Australian Diamonds’ final match of the Quad Series against the New Zealand Silver Ferns got off to a comical start after a hard-to-miss anthem fail.

The two sides were lined up against each other on court when the incident happened with the Silver Ferns having just finished singing, ‘God Defend New Zealand.’

The attention then turned to the Diamonds but the silence at Melbourne Arena was not broken by ‘Advance Australia Fair’ but by ‘Fire’ by Peking Duk instead.

The Diamonds were all smiles as Aussie songwriter Sarah Aarons belted out the words, ‘I’m gonna set this house on…’ before the music was abruptly cut off and the crowd laughed and cheered.

The announcer then asked, ‘Are you now ready for the Australian national anthem?’ as ‘Advance Australia Fair’ started up in the background.

The intro played and the players had barely started singing, ‘Australia’s all let us rejoice’ before the music abruptly stopped again prompting laughter all around again.

The announcer asked again, ‘Is everyone now ready for the Australian anthem?’ prompting a wide call of ‘Yes’ from the crowd before he responded with, ‘Here you go.’

Commentator Sue Gaudion said, “A little bit of humour amongst the anthems to start probably one of the biggest games of season 2018.

“Well done to the players. A bit of a laugh along with a bit of a muck-up with the music but we get on.”

Australia quickly managed to shake off the drama before going on to win 60-55 and complete a clean sweep of the tournament.
