Van Gisbergen rues Supercars pit decision

What a difference a day makes.

On Saturday evening, life was rosy at Queensland Raceway for Supercars star Shane van Gisbergen after he'd stormed to his third race win from four starts.

The Holden star had closed the gap to just 41 points on teammate and championship leader Jamie Whincup going into Sunday's 200km finale at Ipswich.

Halfway through the 65-lap race, van Gisbergen saw Ford driver Scott Pye spear off the track on the final turn.

The New Zealander decided to make a pit stop in anticipation of a safety car but, unfortunately for him, Pye managed to get back on track and the race continued.

Van Gisbergen's pit decision left him in the middle of the field, and he finished 12th and ended the weekend 110 points behind Whincup after the six-time champion took second place behind Craig Lowndes.

"I assumed a safety car would follow, which it didn't," the 26-year-old said.

"That saw us double stack, which screwed us up in a major way.

"I go to Europe next weekend then come back and focus the rest of the year on Supercars."
