Labor's triumph in the South Australian election means the iconic Adelaide 500 will return to the Supercars championship this season.

Labor leader Peter Malinauskas had pledged ahead of the election that the event would be revived if the party was victorious.

The new premier has mooted December 1-4 as the dates for the Adelaide 500, which would end the season.

"We congratulate Peter Malinauskas and his team on their victory in the South Australian election," said Supercars chief executive Shane Howard.

"We now look forward to working together to deliver the Adelaide 500 in December in what will be a spectacular season finale."

The first Adelaide 500 was held in 1999 and inducted into the Supercars Hall of Fame in 2005.
