F1 phenom on verge of history a year after hosting school field trip
When Sebastian Vettel captured the Formula 1 drivers’ championship in 2010, it was an absolute masterclass from a young rising star.
Now, the sport is on the verge of witnessing history repeat itself in Kimi Antonelli - except he is poised to shatter Vettel’s youngest-champion record by at least three years.

Antonelli can mathematically clinch the 2026 title at the upcoming United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.
He extended his championship lead to a season-high 102 points over Mercedes teammate George Russell with his podium in Singapore and with six races remaining in the 2026 season, the 20-year-old Italian is now within touching distance.
To seal his maiden world championship, the Italian needs to outscore George Russell by 23 points, Lewis Hamilton by 14, and Max Verstappen by six in Austin.
If Antonelli takes the victory at the US grand prix, he will secure the crown provided Russell finishes ninth or lower and Hamilton crosses the line fifth or lower.
Should he secure the championship, he will officially dethrone Vettel as the sport’s youngest-ever champion in only his second year on the grid.
It is a staggering ascent for a driver who, just last year, was still balancing life as a teenager.
His season in 2025 was rocky and there were many who questioned if Toto Wolff jumped the gun by tapping a rookie to replace a seven-time world champion in Lewis Hamilton.
Now, Antonelli is laying the groundwork for a career that could echo Hamilton’s prime or rival Verstappen’s record-breaking dominance.
His polished professionalism today is a stark contrast to his debut season.
Last year, the then-schoolboy famously brought his classmates to the paddock ahead of his home grand prix, before most of them even had their driver’s licenses.
From hosting field trips in the garage to standing on the brink of Formula 1 immortality, Antonelli's journey is a testament to a generational talent accelerating ahead of his time.
