F1 icon's awkward interview among Miami storylines buried by Oscar Piastri's stunning hat-trick

The big news coming out of the Miami Grand Prix weekend was Oscar Piastri's dominant drive to win his third consecutive race in the 2025 season.

But the first American race weekend of the year, hosted in the Miami Dolphins' home of Hard Rock Stadium, is always a blockbuster of events, on and off the track, with some wacky storylines.

With awkward post-race celebrations, a teaser look at the new team on the block and drivers causing pre-race chaos, Miami brought all the glitz and glamour for the weekend.

Here are the storylines you might of missed during the weekend:

Lego takes over Miami Driver Parade

Seeing Mercedes and McLaren cars fight each other on track is a sight we are all used to seeing.

But in full-sized Lego F1 cars? Not so much.

Replacing the traditional driver parade that is held in the back of a truck, all 20 drivers on the grid were placed in Lego replicas of their own team's car and allowed to drive around the Miami track to wave and greet fans.

The fleet of 10 cars, one for each driver pairing, rumbled along the Miami International Autodrome at little more than jogging speed but created a huge viral moment for the sport.

The parade was filmed from multiple onboard angles by the drivers, Mercedes and McLaren having a tangle at turn 17 before the Alpine crew joined in on the mayhem that left Lego debris to be cleaned off the track.

Each car was a sized up replica of the Speed Champions range from Lego and the untraditional parade seemed to be a huge win for the sport and its sponsor.

Cadillac unveils logo with no car or driver in sight

Cadillac announced their successful entry into the sport as F1's 11th team in March earlier this year and since then, been gearing up to the unveiling of the new American team.

And this weekend, we got a glimpse of the brand's look.

The highly-anticipated team unveiled their logo and 'brand identity' in a video seen at their red carpet event during the Miami race weekend.

Those in attendance at the high-profile event included NFL star and actor Terry Crews as host or the night, Janelle Monae on the DJ decks and Mick Schumacher.

Cadillac hosted at Queen Miami Beach and there was no sign of any driver announcements or a livery reveal at the team's event that was sandwiched between Saturday's sprint race and the main race on Sunday.

But newly-appointed team owner Dan Towriss said Cadillac is on track to make their debut on the 2026 grid.

"Chassis has arrived, we're continuing to add [personnel] to the team, there are so many work streams that are happening all at once," Towriss said.

Piastri's viral bet

Piastri was the name on everyone's lips in Miami.

The McLaren driver had a flawless race to victory in the main event and furthered his championship standings ahead of his teammate.

His only mistake came in his celebration in parc ferme after Sunday's race, where the Aussie had a stumble after hitting the 'griddy' in front of his very confused team.

When asked after about the viral moment, Piastri admitted the reason he did the dance was because of a rogue bet with NFL wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

The Minnesota Vikings star is well known for his dance after each touchdown but Piastri did not perform the moves with the ease that the Louisiana-native usually does.

The Australian is known for his calm demeanour to the press, but not known for his extroverted tendencies. Still, Piastri stuck to his word and performed F1's first 'griddy' celebration.

"After qualifying yesterday, I didn't practice because I thought that was definitely not going to be needed," said the 24-year-old.

"So yeah, that was my first attempt at a griddy live on world TV.

"I stayed true to the bet, but that's the one and only time you'll be seeing me do that."

Brundle's awkward exchange

Ah, the Sunday grid walk.

Where everyone that is anyone is seen and interviewed in the minutes before the lights go out.

And Martin Brundle is a mainstay in these walks, well-known in the paddock and online for his headstrong but calm demeanour while pushing through some of the big name stars on the grid.

But, the F1 commentator found himself in an awkward exchange after congratulating boxer Conor Benn on his victory in his recent fight against Chris Eubank Jr.

Except Benn didn't win the fight.

Benn was spotted at the Miami Grand Prix just a week after suffering defeat at the hands of his rival in the highly-awaited bout.

This isn't the first time Brundle has made a blunder in his hunt for celebrities.

In Miami's debut in 2022, the F1 commentator accidentally believed NBA player Paolo Banchero to be NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes in his interview.

The two saw the funny side of the embarrassing interaction but the moment went viral online and Brundle is now well known for his slightly awkward celebrity encounters.

Verstappen welcomes first child

Max Verstappen was absent from Thursday's media activities due to his partner Kelly Piquet welcoming the couple's first child into the world.

The two named their daughter Lily and many across the paddock gave out their best parenting advice for the 27-year-old, including Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.

Piquet is the daughter of three-time world champion Nelson Piquet and Horner admitted the genes of the child may cause the young Verstappen-Piquet to be the next F1 star.

"I'm just thinking – the genes of that child are quite incredible," Horner said.

"When you think of Verstappen and Piquet – if it was a racehorse, it'd be worth a fortune! But yeah, it's going to make life a little different for him.

"Why not a woman? The pedigree of that little girl is quite phenomenal. There'll be a rush to sign an option on her, no doubt. But yeah – why not?"

The announcement from the four-time world champion came hours before the Miami Grand Prix weekend.
