'Doesn't sit right': Oscar Piastri penalty divides opinion as Lando Norris extends F1 championship lead

McLaren driver Lando Norris couldn't believe his teammate's unlucky streak as he watched the replay of Oscar Piastri's first lap incident with Kimi Antonelli that saw the Australian handed a 10 second penalty.

The podium sitters were shocked to see Piastri squeezed off the road by the Mercedes driver, Norris joking that Antonelli would need to "thank Charles (Leclerc)" for keeping his teammate out of the fight.

"Oh my god! You have to thank Charles!" Norris joked when watching the replay.

"Yeah poor guy," admitted Antonelli.

Norris extended his lead in the Formula 1 championship after winning the Brazilian Grand Prix on Monday morning (AEDT) and went home with a full haul of 33 points.

Piastri left Interlagos with zero points in the sprint and ten in the main grand prix.

Norris took a lights to flag win, sharing the podium with Mercedes' Antonelli and Red Bull's Max Verstappen second and third, respectively.

Third-placed Verstappen had a mega drive from the pitlane to third, a drive that reminded fans of his win last year from 17th place.

The Red Bull driver's ability to charge through the pack may prove a challenge to the McLaren domination, but British driver Norris has firmly solidified his championship lead.

He now has 390 points in the standings, with Piastri's fifth place leaving him 24 points behind with three more races to go.

A costly 10-second penalty for the Aussie in the sixth lap begun a tough outing.

At the restart from a safety car, Piastri went down the inside of Antonelli but things got a little bit tight when Charles Leclerc was bundled off the track.

"He left me no space," Piastri said over the radio.

Martin Brundle agreed with the decision.

"That's the standard penalty," he said on the Sky Sports broadcast.

"There were no mitigating circumstances, so I'm not surprised. He had to have a go, there's no doubt about that, but the penalty is a fair cop."

Not everyone was on the same page however, with fellow commentator David Croft conceding the penalty "doesn't sit right" while others took to social media to voice their displeasure with the decision to penalise Piastri.

When asked if he regretted the incident post-race, Piastri doubled down.

"No I don't think so - I had a very clear opportunity and I went for it," he said.

"The two on the outside braked quite late and, yeah, there was a bit of a lock up but I could see Kimi wasn't giving any space, and I can't disappear.

"The decision is what it is."

Jamie Chadwick also felt it was a rough call on Piastri given the circumstances.

"The person who hasn't used all the room is Kimi for me, so I'm on the side where Oscar has been hard done by," the expert said on Sky Sports after the race.

"I feel like he (Antonelli) could've held position but made his life easier.

"He's not locked up because he's out of control. He's locked because he's (Antonelli) turned in on him a bit."

Norris won his seventh race of the season, the same number as Piastri.

Asked after the race how he managed to bounce back in the championship, Norris replied: "Just ignore everyone who talked crap about you."

He added that there is "still a long way to go and that things could "change quickly".

There are three races left in the F1 season - Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
