A bristling James Moffat says Brodie Kostecki was driving "like a dickhead" when the pair clashed on lap 46 of the Bathurst 1000.

Having bogged down off the start, Moffat was in recovery mode and running sixth when Kostecki made a bold dive down the inside at The Cutting.

The pair made contact and the Monster Mustang was spun around, but miraculously stayed off the wall.

"Our day was probably going OK for us until Brodie just drove like a dickhead at The Cutting and turned us around," Moffat said.

"That put us on the back foot really for the rest of the day."

Despite being dumped to the back of the pack, Moffat and lead driver Cameron Waters fought back to finish third.

"I'm so proud of the team for just putting their heads down and not giving up," Moffat said.

"Cam drove the wheels off it like he always does, so to get back up on the podium is nice.

"We probably just weren't quite fast enough with the car speed, and then when you get stuck behind cars it's just so difficult to follow in these current-generation cars.

"You really only got a lap or two to pull a move otherwise it's usually follow the leader."

Waters said the clash highlighted "the beauty of Bathurst".

"It throws stuff at you across the day. You need to not get caught up in other people's stuff and have a clean day, and we didn't have that today," Waters said.

"Disappointed to come third. I guess we've been consistent over the last few years up here, which is great, but we need to get the job done."
