McCann's son says her Games win 'so good'

MCG veterans say it is the loudest noise they have heard at the venue.

It is certainly a memory that Kerryn McCann's elder son Benton will never forget.

On March 15, 2006, his mother gave the Melbourne Commonwealth Games its moment when she out-kicked Kenyan Hellen Cherono Koskei to win the marathon gold medal.

An MCG crowd of 80,000 saw the pulsating finish.

Benton, now 19, his younger sister Josie and their grandmother Judy Hindmarsh returned to the MCG on Tuesday.

It is a decade to the day since McCann's outstanding win.

"I remember sitting in the heat and thinking I wanted to go home for the first few hours," Benton said.

"I was pulled by my shirt and we all stood on our chairs.

"The screams were so loud, they hurt my ears.

"But at the same time, it was so good."

Tuesday was the first time Benton had been inside the MCG since his Mum's second-straight Commonwealth Games marathon gold medal.

"It's definitely weird - it's a lot bigger than I remember," he said.

"At the same time, it's really cool.

"You can look around and re-imagine everyone packed out here, screaming.

"It's a lot different, coming back with no one here."

Returning to the MCG is also poignant for McCann's family - two years later, she died of cancer aged just 41.

Benton, wearing his "Team McCann" t-shirt, famously accompanied his Mum on her MCG lap of honour after she won the Games marathon.

"It's still surreal, to this day, that I did that with her," he said.

"The whole thing happened so fast - before I knew it, we'd already run around.

"I'm so happy I could do that with her."

Tuesday also marks 750 days until the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast - the fifth time Australia hosts the event.
