The Macau Grand Prix was brought to a standstill in spectacular fashion after just one lap in the GT car qualifying session.

Daniel Juncadella was leading the session when he caught the barrier in the first lap and spun out, collecting the cars that followed behind him. With the corner quickly filling with cars, there was no time for the rest of the field to react, leading to a huge 12-car pile-up.

Luckily there were no serious injuries from the accident.

Only four drivers were able to make it back to the pit stop after the pile-up. Eight cars were able to restart with Mercedes-AMG GT3 driver Edoardo Mortara taking pole position.

The narrow Macau street circuit also tragically claimed the life of British rider Daniel Hegarty, 31, in the motorcycle portion of the Grand Prix.

His death brought the race to an end after just six laps, but there was little celebration on the podium, with the motorcycling world mourning the loss.
