Kejelcha just misses world indoor record

Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha has missed tying the world indoor mile record by a mere one-hundredth of a second at the prestigious Millrose Games in New York.

Kenya's Michael Saruni also clocked the third fastest indoor 800m of all-time as the young Africans highlighted the annual meet at Manhattan's Armory track.

Kejelcha raced home in three minutes 48.46 seconds, the 21-year-old almost taking down Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj's world record set in 1997 in Ghent, Belgium.

Saruni won the 800m in a national record 1:43.98.

Only Kenyan-born world record holder Wilson Kipketer of Denmark has run faster with times of 1:42.67 and 1:43.96 in 1997.

The 23-year-old Saruni sprinted past American Donavan Brazier in the closing straight to claim victory.

Both athletes beat Johnny Gray's 27-year-old US record with a time of 1:44.41, the seventh-fastest ever. Gray had clocked 1:45.00.

Jamaica's Kemoy Campbell collapsed while leading after 1000 meters in the 3000.

Campbell was treated by emergency services personnel on the track for approximately 20 minutes before being taken to a medical facility.

Reports indicated a defibrillator was used to revive the unconscious runner.

Olympic champion English Gardner took the women's 60 in 7.10 and Sharika Nelvis won the women's 60 hurdles in 8.01.

Konstanze Klosterhalfen won the women's mile in a German-record 4:19.98.
