Jousting fans left 'dreamin' in Sydney

The last time jousting was a big thing in Australia most likely came when Dale Kerrigan asked his dad Darryl how much jousting sticks were worth in one of the many memorable scenes from classic Australian movie 'The Castle'.

Well no-one was ‘dreamin’ in the well-to-do Sydney suburb of St Ives on Sunday when a jousting tournament took place.

The event – part of the St Ives Medieval Fair – attracted a great field of jousters from all over the world.

The brutal sport, which involves armoured men on horses hitting each other with wooden poles while travelling speedily on horseback, was shown live on television and attracted a decent crowd.

As is the case with such events, period costumes were the order of the day for many visitors.

The competition was fierce and the tournament ended when Australian Cliff Marisma beat the Netherlands’ Arne Koets in the final.

The decider was supposed to include three ‘’passes’’, but an injured Koets retired after just one.
