Jones ban extended as positives revealed

UFC star Jon Jones has had his drug suspension extended after officials revealed he had tested positive for two estrogen blocking substances.

Jones, who was pulled from the headline bout against Daniel Cormier on last week’s UFC 200 card just 72 hours out from the fight, returned positive samples for both clomiphene and letrozole.

While the substances aren’t considered performance-enhancing themselves, there is some evidence that certain blockers can increase testosterone production.

"They found something in one of my samples," Jones said on July 8.

"I don't even know how to pronounce it. I've been taking the same supplements the majority of my career. I've been so outspoken about being against any type of performance enhancers. To this day, I'm extremely against performance enhancers.

"The whole thing sucks. Being labeled as someone who would cheat hurts more than anything else I've ever been through in my career.”

Jones faces a potential two-year ban under the UFC anti-doping laws, and remains suspended until a hearing with the Nevada Sports and Athletic Commission expected to take place in October or November.

The suspension and potential drug ban is just the latest chapter in a long list of controversies for Jones.  In April last year he was suspended indefinitely after turning himself in relation to a hit-and-run incident for which he later plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, while last January he tested positive for cocaine prior to UFC 182.
