Fights in ice hockey are nothing new but this ugly stoush between a high school kid and a referee crosses the line.

The incident happened in upstate New York during a match between Williamsville East (near Buffalo) and Clarence.

As the referee was escorting a player from Williamstown East to the penalty box, the official appears to give him a shove straight into the glass.

The player resents the attention and turns around to push the referee to the ice, prompting a major penalty and his ejection from the rink for game misconduct.

The cheering crowd are stunned by the incident, with one person yelling out, "I betcha that's a proud moment for a parent."

Or not, obviously being surrounded by all that ice wasn't enough to help him keep his cool.
