Hawaiian big wave guru tames ‘Jaws’
When it comes to taming monster waves Shane Dorian has proven time and again he's among the best in the world.
The Hawaiian charger claimed the $50,000 Billabong XXL Global Big Award for the Ride of the Year in 2013 with an amazing barrel at 8m-plus "Jaws" at Maui, in Hawaii.
And Dorian's again in the running for the 2015 award for similar ride at the fabled offshore reef, shot on November 11.
Showing the fearlessness renowned of big wave surfers around the world, the 42-year-old dropped down the face of what looked like giant slab of water resembling an office block before pulling into tube you could drive a truck through.
The veteran completely disappeared under a giant collapsing curtain and then emerged seconds later amid the hissing spray of the barrel spit for an incredible ride.
Whether its enough to claim another $50,000 pay day for Ride of the Year or the $20,000 prize for the Paddle Wave of the Year, only time will tell, with competitors having until March 20 next year to submit their entries.
Either way Dorian has again proven his freakish ability.
The awards cover six categories - ride of the year, paddle, biggest wave, tube, best overall performance and girls best overall performance.
