Good start for divers Keeney, Bedggood

Commonwealth Games diving medallists Maddison Keeney and Domonic Bedggood have made good starts in their bids for Olympic selection with strong performances on day two of the Rio qualification event in Melbourne.

Keeney finished first in the preliminary and semi-final rounds of the women's springboard competition, while Bedggood was the standout performer in the men's platform.

"I was a bit nervous in the preliminaries, but I felt okay in the semis," said Keeney, who won Commonwealth silver and bronze medals in Glasgow two years ago.

"I knew I just had to do what I had trained to do. There really was not much more I could change."

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Esther Qin made a slow start to the competition, finishing sixth after the preliminary round behind Keeney and 2012 Olympian Anabelle Smith.

But she performed stronger in the semi-finals to finish second behind Keeney with Smith in fourth place.

Bedggood was solid in the platform, where he won gold diving alongside Beijing gold medallist Matthew Mitcham in the synchro at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Australia has qualified two positions in each of the individual events for Rio.
