Australian golfer Karrie Webb has produced her best result at a major in almost two seasons to finish fifth at the Women's British Open.

Webb shot a one-under 71 to finish in a three-way tie for fifth, seven shots behind eventual winner Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand.

It's Webb's best result in a tournament since February's Australian Open where she finished third, and her highest finish at a major since her second place the Evian Championship in November 2014.

Her nine-under 279 for the tournament also represented a major turnaround for Webb, who had fallen to No.64 in the world rankings.

Sarah Jane Smith was the next best placed Australian, who faltered to a one-over 73 final round to finish in an eight-way tie for 17th, five-under for the tournament.

Minjee Lee was one shot further back in a tie for 25th, while Su Oh's hapless week ended with her finishing seven-over and in a tie for 70th.

World No.1 Lydia Ko of New Zealand finished way down the field in a tie for 40th after returning a 74 for a one-under total of 287.
