Bryson DeChambeau fumes at 'unbelievable' issue before quitting LIV Golf tournament

Polarising golf star Bryson DeChambeau's week went from bad to worse when he was forced to withdraw from LIV's Mexico event.

The 32-year-old is one of many players whose future in the game is up in the air following last week's bombshell that LIV's Saudi funding is about to be pulled.

The news has left many of the game's top players in a sort of limbo and wondering whether they'll have a tour to compete on.

Days earlier, DeChambeau had missed the cut at The Masters after posting 6-over through the first two rounds at Augusta National.

His frustrations were evident during that tournament, and they threatened to spill over when he returned to the LIV circuit at the weekend.

During his third round he hit out of a bunker and his ball sailed across the green, coming to rest on an area of bare dirt.

The brash American was fuming at the state of the course and had to call a rules official over to ask whether he was expected to play the shot where it lay.

"You've got destroyed grass... oh, this is rough?" he fumed as a small gathering of fans stood by.

"Guys, this is what we're playing on.

"You've got to have a rule here. It's unbelievable, absolutely out of the question."

DeChambeau ended up hitting the shot from the patch of dirt, and then one-putted.

But the following morning he withdrew from the tournament, citing a wrist injury.

DeChambeau, who was trying to become the first player to win three straight events on LIV Golf, started poorly at Chapultepec Golf Club and was 16 shots behind Jon Rahm when he withdrew.

“I experienced some discomfort in my wrist during yesterday's round and have decided to withdraw from the the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City to prevent further injury,” DeChambeau said on social media.

“Not how I wanted this week to go.”

DeChambeau said he would be evaluated and hoped to be at LIV Golf Virginia on May 7, a week before the PGA Championship, which is the sport's next major.

He missed the cut in the Masters last week when he took two shots to get out of a bunker and made triple bogey on his last hole.

Rahm took a two-shot lead into the final round in Mexico City.

The week has been filled with uncertainty surrounding the Saudi-funded league, with CEO Scott O'Neil writing a memo to staff to say LIV was assured of funding through the end of the year amid reports speculating about the league’s financial future.
