Frayne third in Diamond League final

Australian Henry Frayne has cashed in at the Diamond League final in Zurich, finishing third in the men's long jump behind South African stars Luvo Manyonga and Ruswahl Samaii.

So often cruelled by injury in previous years, the 28-year-old Frayne has produced a remarkably consistent season in 2018.

He claimed silver behind Manyonga at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April before going on to enjoy a long and successful European summer campaign.

Frayne's best jump of 8.16m in the final in Zurich was good enough for third spot and $US10,000 ($A13,500) in prize money.

Reigning world champion Manyonga won with 8.36m in the absence of injured Cuban young gun Juan Miguel Echevarria.

Samaii was second with 8.32m, while Frayne produced his best jump in the fourth round.

"From the third to the fourth round I ended moving my mark back about half a metre, which is a big change in a comp like this," Frayne said.

"But with those guys jumping 8.32m I was thinking, I could win a Diamond League here."

Jamaican Tajay Gayle soared to 8.15m in the final round to go within 1cm of pipping Frayne for third spot.

"It was an anxious wait," said Frayne.

"(Gayle) has done that to me a few times."

Fellow Australian Ryan Gregson was 10th in the men's 1500m, with Kenyan Timothy Cheruiyot securing the win in three minutes 30.27 seconds.

Eliza Ault-Connell was seventh in the non-Diamond League mixed 3000m wheelchair event.
